Dr. Gregory Wiener to Present Data on Use of a New Sensitive System
for
Detecting Gastric Reflux in the Airway
LOS ANGELES, CA -- May 22, 2006 -- Dr. Gregory Wiener will be presenting
data on a new
sensitive and patient-friendly device for detecting liquid and
aerosolized supraesophageal gastric
reflux (SEGR) events in the oropharynx at this week's international
Digestive Disease Week
conference in Los Angeles.
Clinical and animal studies have documented the association of
the deleterious effects of acidic
and weakly acidic events in the airway associated with widespread
respiratory disorders such as
asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and sleep
apnea. Identification of such
events in the upper airway has evaded understanding due to the
lack of a suitable and reliable
sensor. Dr. Wiener will present data on the utility of the Restech
Dx p-H Measurement System™
for this application. The Restech system uses a 1.5mm diameter
nasopharyngeal catheter placed
in the oropharynx behind the soft palate, a position that presents
minimal discomfort to the patient
and allows simple visual placement by the physician. It uses wireless
telemetry to transmit the p
H data from the catheter to a pocket-sized data recorder, further
enhancing patient comfort.
In addition to Dr Wiener's talk, Restech will be holding a meeting
of its Scientific Advisory
Board, headed by Tom DeMeester, MD, Chair of Surgery, USC Keck
School of Medicine. Other
members of the Scientific Advisory Board include Michael Vaezi,
MD PhD, Professor of
Medicine, GI Clinical Director at Vanderbilt University, Greg Postma,
MD, Professor and
Director of the Medical College of Georgia Center for Voice and
Swallowing Disorders, and
George Triadafilopoulos, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine, Division
of Gastroenterology and
Hepatology at Stanford University.
Dr. Wiener will be presenting at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 24,
2006 in Room 403B at the
Los Angeles Convention Center. The Restech product display is located
at booth 2459 in the
Exhibit Hall.
